On 23 June 2013, the commission of the UNESCO in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, voted to include the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in the list of cultural and natural heritage sites. The ca. 560 hectare world heritage site is the world’s first hillside park to receive this honour. The UNESCO thus distinguishes the grounds as an outstanding and unique testimony to European architecture and garden art. Embedded in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe above Wilhelmshöhe Palace, Löwenburg Castle was built between 1793 and 1801 as one of the first pseudo-medieval castle ruins in Europe. It is an important individual element of the Gesamtkunstwerk Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. Landgrave Wilhelm IX (reign 1785–1821, later Elector Wilhelm I) commissioned his court architect Heinrich Christoph Jussow (1754–1825) with the construction. The castle served the landgrave both as a pleasure castle and to represent the historical significance of the House of Hesse that had been reigning since the Middle Ages.
